Again, I am telling the good and bad implications of the houses. The 11^th, the 3^rd, the 8^th, the 6^th, the 2^nd, the 7^th and the 12^th houses are bad. Those houses occupied by lords of these evil houses definitely get spoiled in their significances. Maharishi has excluded the 1^st house or house of creation from the evil touch because the 1^st house is to the native neither good or bad as such.

(ii) Maharishi Parasara has given the following Slokas in Dasa Antardasa chapters:-

(a) Lagnat upachaye rahau Yogakaraka samyute

Dayesat subharasisthe rajasanmana kirtitam (Ravi Dasa Rahu Antardasa)

(b) Lagnat upachaye ketu Yogakaraka samyute

Subhamse subhavarge cha subhakarka phalapradam (Ravi Dasa Ketu Antardasa).

(c) Subhayute subhaidriste Lagnat upachaye pi ya

Yogakaraka sambandhe yatra karya artha siddhikrit (Chandra Das Rahu Antardasda).

(d) Lagnat upachaye Rahau subhadristiyuteshite

Mitramse tungabhagamse yogakaraka samyute

Rajyatabham mahotsaham rajapritim subhavaham (Rahu Dasa Rahu Antardasa).

(e) Lagnat upachaye rahau subhagrahasamyute

Ajasamlapa santosha nutana prabhu darsanam (Budha Dasa Rahu Antardasa)

(f) Lagnat upachaye sukre subhagrahayutekshite

Mitramse tungabhagamse Yogakaraka samyute

Rajyalabham mathotsaham rajapritim subhavaham (Sukra Dasa Sukra Bhukti).

(g) Lagnat upachaye Rahau Yogakarakasamyute

Satrunasa mahotsaham rajapritikari subha (Sukra Dasa Rahu Antardasa).

It will be clear from the above slokas that Upachaya houses arer not to be calculated from the Ascendant; it is a misconception – otherwise, why would Maharishi specify Lagnat upachaye. The 3^rd, the 6^th, the 10^th and the 11^th houses from the Ascendant are definitely malefic and as such, how can they be houses of prosperity? Rather, they are houses of adversity. If these houses of adversity are to be converted into houses of prosperity, there is absolute necessity of additional qualifications of benefic significance, e.g., combination with Yogakaraka planet occupation of benefic sign or Amsa of benefic planet, with Varga excellence, combination with benefics, aspect by benefics, in friendly sign, in exaltation sign or amsa. Etc.

(iii) I have scanned through Purvakhanda and Uttara khanda or Brihat Hora to find out any direct hint about four Upachaya houses – the 4^th, the 5^th, the 9^th and the 10^th houses. In Chapter 11 of Purvakhanda, the following Sloka is found:-

Pade lagne saptame va kendrakonaupachaye

Suvirya samsthite khete bharya bhatri sukhaprada.

If a strong planet is in arudhapada or Lagna or 7^th house or in Upachaya angles and tri-angles, wife brings happiness to husband. It should be noted that the 1^st and the 7^th houses have been excluded from Kendra and Kona added to sum up Upachaya houses. There is no point in separating Upachaya from Kendra because the 10^th house gets duplication and we cannot expect redundancy in the astrological treaties of Maharishi Parasara.

When we have come to definite conclusion that the 4^th, the 5^th, the 9^th and the 10^th houses are really to be termed Upachaya houses and Upachaya houses are tobe calculated neither from the Ascendant nor from the Moon but from Upakendras in the order of 3^rd, the 6^th, the 10^th and the 11^th respectively, let us wade through famous astrological treaties from Varaha Mihira to modern times.
