Houses of Prosperity Part 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 1

The famous astrologer Pandit Gopesh Kumar Ojha has brought out the meanings of Upachaya and Apachaya – Upachaya is increase to heap or prosperity and Apachaya is decrease to heap or adversity. When these terms are applied to specific houses, we come face to face with one of the greatest misconceptions of Indian Astrology. Upachayas or houses of prosperity have been taken as the 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and the 11th calculated from the Ascendant. No astrologer from Jaimini to modern times has departed from the beaten track except Varaha Mihira. In Sloka 16 of Chapter 1 of Brihat Jataka, Varaha Mihira has given the usual definition but added “no niyam eke” to suggest that some astrologers held different views in the matter. He, however, has not specified the differing views. Pandit Ojha has raised doubts as to how the 1st, the 4th, the 5th and the 9th can be taken as Apachaya houses or houses of adversity. He has tried to explain the significance of the term Upachaya on the basis of twelve divisions of the body of the Kalapurusha but the elucidation is not at all convincing. Before bringing out various principles out of Upachaya furnished by Varaha Mihira, Kalidasa, Mantreswara, Vaidyanatha Pandit, I desire to elucidate on real interpretation of Upachaya as we fid in Maharishi Parasara’s Brihat Hora.

The Parasari Slokas relating to the houses are reproduced below:-

Lagna turya asta viyatam Kendra samga visesata

Dwi pancha randhra lavakhyam gyeya, chiva upakendrakam

Tri sada bhagya vyayadinam anukendram iti smrita

Lagnat panchama bhagyasya kona somga vidhiyate

Sastha astana vyaya bhanam dur samga trik samgaka

Chaturasram turya radhram kathayanti dwijottama

Swasthat upachayakshani tri sada aya ambaranihi.

At the outset, Maharishi classifies twelve signs under triple fours – Kendras or angles; Upakendra or succeedents: Anukendra or cadents (he has not used these foreign terms like Panapnara and Apaklima. Kendras of angles (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses) are the main supporters in the preservation of life. Upkendras or succeedants the (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses) add to the significances of Kendras while Anukendras, or cadents decrease the angular effects. (The theory of the 2nd house advancing the cause of a house and its 12th house obstructinig it is based on this Parasari exposition. The theory  has to be applied for angles only – the 1st house with the 2nd and 12th houses; the 4th house with the 5th and 3rd house; the 4th house with the 5th and 3rd houses; the 7th house with the 11th and 9th houses. The karaka theory is an exception to the above principle. Bhavakaraka or karaka planet for a particular house is very effective when it is in the 12th of the concerned Bhava or house because karaka or cause must precede effect or significances of a Bhava or house).

The 5th and 9th houses from the Ascendant are termed Kona or triangles. The 6th, the 8th and the 12th houses from the Ascendant are called Dur or Trik (Dusthanas). The 4th and the 8th houses from the Ascendant are called Chaturasra. Upachayas or houses of prosperity are to be calculated from houses that (or the 2nd, the 5th, the 8th, and the 11th) in the order of the 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and the 11th houses respectively. Upachaya is, therefore, definitely related to Upakendra and not Lagna. The matter may be tabulated thus:

Specified House
Upachaya House
2nd house to its
3rd house is equal to
4th house (angle)
5th house to its
6th house is equal to
10th house (angle)
8th house to its
10th house is equal to
5th house (triangle)
11th house to its
11th house is equal to
9th house (triangle)

It will be clear from the above tabulation that the 4th, the 5th, the 9th and the 10th houses are really Upachaya houses and no one can deny that these are the houses of prosperity. The other eight houses are, therefore, Apachayas or houses or adversity. In support of my assertion, I am advancing Parasari principles as under:-

(i) In Karaka chapter, Maharishi Parasara has furnished the following Slokas:-

Punah tanyadaya Bhava sthayapya tesam subha asubham

Lavam tritiyam randhramcha satru swa stri vuyayastha atha

Esam yogena yo Bhava tan nasam propnuyat dhruvam

Ete Bhava samkshata asubha dwijasttama.
