Encyclopedia of Vedic Astrology: Yogas:- Ayur (Longevity) Yogas, Chapter XII, Part – 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

1. Introduction

1.1 Sage Mantreshwar in Phaldeepika (Chapter 13, Sloka 1), has said that, “When a child is born, one should first ascertain his longevity and thereafter only, other matters like Rajyoga etc should be looked into with the help of an astrologer”. This holds good for every time a native approaches an astrologer for seeking counseling/ prediction. Presence of any benefic/ malefic yoga or the prediction is meaningless, unless one has adequate life to enjoy/ suffer the predicted event. Determination of longevity is the most difficult & complex task. The prediction often go hay-wire, as it depends on so many factors. Yet it is the most sought after query of the natives in all age group either for self or for their close relations.

1.2 The literature on determination of life span is very vast. Almost all astrological savants have given their opinion on the subject. They have also given various yogas indicative of various life spans. There is as yet no foolproof method to reach at the exact length of life that a native is likely to have. Astrologically available methods for this purpose are two folds as under:

i) Mathematical calculation of longevity: These methods are not very reliable and are also beyond the scope of this book.

ii) The Planetary yogas: A careful analysis of these, with an integration of dasha and transit, is eminently reliable.

2. Categories of Longevity

2.1 The longevity is normally divided into following three groups:

i) Alpayu or Short life: from 0 to 32 years.

ii) Madhyayu or Medium life*: from 32 to 66 years.

iii) Purnayu or Full life@: from 66 to 100 years.

(*) Different astrologers have opined different upper age for medium life between 64 to 70 years. Some astrologers have suggested to add one more category of life span between 100 to 120 years and called this group as Shatayu or Amritayu. The readers may see the usefulness of it for themselves.

2.2 Alpayu has been further sub-divided into following three groups:

i) Balaristha: from 0 to 8 years.

ii) Yogaristha: from 8 to 20 years.

iii) Alpayu: from 20 to 32 years.

3. Significators of Longevity & Killer (Maraka) Planets

3.1 Different planets signify/ rule over life span of a native as under:

i) Moon: during infancy up to 8 years.

ii) Mercury: during adolescent from 8 to 20 years.

iii) Mars: during young age from 20 to 32 years.

iv) Venus; initial middle age from 32 to 48 years.

v) Jupiter: later middle age from 48 to 65 years.

vi) Saturn: old age beyond 65 years.

3.2 A general list of Marakas is given in Para 2.3 of Chapter 1. Saturn & Rahu behave as unqualified Marakas. They need not own adverse houses to kill. Lords of 2nd, 7th and 12th are also qualified Marakas. In addition, Chhidra grahas (vulnerable planets) can also cause diseases or death.
