Virgo is the sixth zodiac
sign which is a biped sign, resides in the south, rises with its head, and has
a medium build. It is a Virgin and is Tamasic (a disposition of demons) in
nature. The origin of its name has been lost over time but among European and
Middle Eastern mythology, Virgo has always been a symbol of fertility and a
representation of the production of crops. Even in prehistoric times, this
Zodiac Sign was perceived as both a mother and a virgin. According to some
Western classical, Virgo’s original symbol was the Sphinx… mythological poser
of riddles… and, indeed, those governed by Virgo are prone to question, turning
inward in order to seek larger meanings about causes and purposes in life. Some
sources maintain that Virgo began as The Great Mother, a Sumerian Corn Goddess,
while in Egypt, she was Nidaba, Goddess of Grain, whose harvest begin when the
Moon was in her constellation. In medieval times, Virgo was associated with the
Virgin Mary. However, in most depictions, Virgo holds sheaves of wheat or an
ear of corn, emphasizing her role as a Goddess of Fertility and Agriculture.
Occasionally portrayed as bearing flowers, this image may be a reference to Mi,
her Babylonian name, which means “cluster of flowers. Mercury is lord of this
sign which is considered as crown prince or heir apparent in the Vedic
Astrology. It is a resident of women’s pleasure rooms and is strong in daytime
The symbol for Virgo is a young woman, standing in a boat, holding wheat (or
corn) and fire. It belongs to the business community and is variegated. It
relates to hurricanes (`Prabharanjani’). Budh, the Mercury is the ruler and the
Virgo is a dual, earthy female sign. As compared to Gemini, Mercury’s qualities
manifest very differently in an earthy sign, as the excellent discriminative
qualities of Mercury are expressed in a more physical form. The result is an
unsurpassed eye for details in practical matters. Mercury is a neuter planet,
and Virgo is female, causing a rather tender combination. The symbol for Virgo
symbolizes an industrious but homely quality. Just like in the case of Gemini
the dual quality of the sign is reflected by having opposite elements in the
symbol. People with a prominent Virgo will be somewhat shy, and have a soft,
tender disposition. They will be very good at organizing and keeping track of
details, and tend to worry more than necessary. They will be likely to have
practical skills, especially related to communication and information processing.
This Sign will become strong, when it will be in between 26degree. 20’ to
30degree.00’
In Roman mythology Mercury
is the god of commerce, travel and thievery, the Roman counterpart of the Greek
god Hermes, the messenger of the Gods. The planet probably received this name
because it moves so quickly across the sky. It was given two names by the
Greeks: Apollo for its apparition as a morning star and Hermes as an evening
star. Greek astronomers knew, however, that the two names referred to the same
body. Mercury acts to process large volumes of information within our essential
being as represented by the Sun. It allows a person to think, discriminate, and
express oneself and to move about. This has been called an animator of movement
and is associated with our nervous system, the communication and transportation
system within our bodies. Mercury tends to make a person verbose, critical, and
high strung. The person born under the sign ruled by this planet may even give
Leo a run for his money in the egotistical department.
