Basil / Tulsi

The common names are ocimum basilcum, labiatate, tulsi.

Basil is a most sacred plant of India, it is sattva, sacred to lord Vishnu. It is a much branched erect herb, up to three feet height.

It is a divine plant, of faith, compassion, soothing to mind and heart, kept in every house, gardens, temples for worship and purifying effects, as it liberates ozone from the Sun rays. The leaves and seeds of the plant are medicinal. The oil obtained from leaves has the property of destroying bacteria and insects.

It is diaphoretic, antipyretic, antispasmodic, carminative, stomachic, galactagogue. It helps in cure of fevers, cold, flu, stomach cramps, vomiting indigestion, constipation, headaches, cough, and menstrual pains. It removes kapha from lungs and nasal passages and vata from colon, strengthens the nerve tissue. The fresh juice cures fungal infections. Decoction of the roots is given in malarial fever to bring about sweating.

Black pepper / Marich

The other names are piper nigrum, piperaceae.

The part used are fruit, which is pungent and hot. It is stimulant, expectorant, carminative, anthlmintic.

It stimulates the heart, kidney and mucous membrane of the urinary and intestinal tracts. It is eliminated in the urine and faeces. In large doses it causes abdominal pain, vomiting irritation of the bladder, urethra and on the skin etc. It burns up ama and cleanses the alimentary canal. It may be taken nasally a medicated ghee as for sinus congestion, and headaches. With honey it works as expectorant and mucus cleanser.

The black pepper is used in many culinary preparations as a condiment and carminative. It gives a feeling of warmth and causes sweating hence a god antidote to cold food e.g. Cucumbers.

Camphor / Kapura

The other names are Cinnamomum camphora, Lauraceae, Karpura.

The part used are crystallized distilled oil, leaves. Camphor is obtained by distillation of Camphor tree wood and leaves. It is expectorant, decongestant, stimulant, antispasmodic, bronco-dilator, nervine, analgestic, antiseptic. It is used for bronchitis and asthma to control hypersecretion, for exhaustion, depression, stomach ache an abdominal pain, to stimulate blood and energy circulation and kill insects / worms.

Camphor is used mainly for local applications on sprains, inflammations and rheumatic pains. It is also given internally in certain types of diarrhea or as cardiac stimulant. Medically, it stimulates the heart, respiration and the vasomotor ganglia, and stimulates and increases and the sexual appetite, after a time it depresses the generative function. It stimulates the uterus and increases the menstrual flow. On the skin it produces increased diaphoresis. As an anodyne it allays pain, relieves sexual excitement as in chrodee and other neurotic affections. It is eliminated by the skin, kidneys and bronchi; often causes dysuria.

In large doses it produces gastro-enteritis and symptoms of irritant poison. It depresses the heart, gives rise to cold, sweats, cold hands and feet, coma, convulsions and death. In comparatively large doses it is given in puerperal mania.

An enema of camphor is given to expel worms (ascarides). Externally it is used as a wash for ulcer. In toothache, camphor dissolved in alcohol and applied to the cavities of carious teeth gives relief. Used as a snuff it checks coryza. The liniment is useful for sprains, bruises, for rheumatic pains of joints, also in spasmodic pains in muscles.

Cloves / Lavanga

The other names are Caryophyllus aromaticus, Myrtaceae, Lavanga.

It is spicy and warm. The parts used are the flower bud. Clove oil is composed of eugenol, caryophyllene, acetyl eugenol, tannin, wax and fat. A volatile oil, a resinous substance of deep red brown colour, a colouring matter, a salt of lime, oxide of iron and woody matter.

Cloves which are the dried flower buds of the tree, are strongly aromatic, tonic stimulant, and carminative, diuretic. They are useful in flatulence and indigestion and stop nausea and vomiting. Clove oil is used as antiseptic and preservative.

Taken internally, it is carminative and antispasmodic. It dispel chill and disinfect the lymphatic, along with rock candy, they are effective in cough and cold. It is given in fever, deranged menstruation, hysteria, convulsions, rheumatism, and gout and also used in perfumery. It has rajasic quality.
