Herbs of Common Utility


Its common names are Aloe spp, Liliaceae, Kumari

The plant is one to two feet tall. Can be grown in pots for indoor use.

The part used are powder of the leaf, and the gel.

It contains barbaloin, isobarbaloin the two aloin, aloiemodin and resin.

Aloe is bitter tonic, purgative, anti-inflammatory, vulnerary, rejuvenative, and alternative. Aloe gel is one of the important tonic for liver and spleen, for blood, for regulating pitta and the female reproductive system. The gel, which is comprised of approximately 50 p.c. water may be taken once or twice daily for pre-menstrual syndrome, menopause and by women who have had hysterectomies.

The principal illnesses and discomforts that the aloe plant helps to prevent, control, and or cure are: acne, peptic and stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, headaches, athlete’s foot, insomnia, inflammation, constipation, colitis, dysentery, digestive problems, rheumatism, clotting, tuberculosis, muscular pain dermatitis, burns, skin rashes, multiple sclerosis, varicose veins, arthritis, stomach and colon cancer, poor circulation, skin infections, intestinal inflammation, anaemia. Aloe gel is thought to be good for all three humours.

Now aloe has become a tradition in beauty care, being an important element in many types of beauty products. The fresh gel is very effective for treatments of burns, skin rashes, injuries, and wounds. Aloe powder is a powerful laxative that must be taken in small quantity.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) / Dhanyaka

The plant is two to three feet tall, the seeds is planted annually. The part used are fruits, fresh plant, the leaves are spicy and cool and seed neutral. The fruit yields a volatile oil 1 p.c., fixed oil 13 p.c., mucilage, tannin, malic, and ash 5 p.c., which may be colourless or pale yellow.

The seeds of coriander may be used in hot curries and sauces and sparingly in soups and stews. The seeds are a good household remedy for many pitta disorders, mainly of digestive tract or urinary system. They provide good flavouring for sausage, cabbage, red beets, cookies, baked apples and stuffing. If used too freely, the seeds have a narcotic effect.

Coriander is an appetizer, antispasmodic, carminative, stomachic and aromatic, used in sore throat, improvers digestion and good for dyspepsia and dysentery and common catarrh, but chiefly as a flavouring agent and as a corrective to griping  medicines as rhubarb and senna. The oil may be applied for rheumatism and painful joints. The fresh juice is effective internally for allergies, hay fever and skin diseases.

Garlic (Allium sativum)

The plant is one foot tall, perennial, planted in the spring, it deters all kinds of pests. When the plant is dry, cut off the tops and store the bulbs.

It is used all round medicinally. When taken in diet, it keeps cold away and helps heart fit & fine. Gives a sense of wholeness to the person. It lack sour taste, rest all other six tastes are present. It is considered a rejuvenate agent for both kapha and vata. It cleanses ama kapha from the blood and lymphatic.

It contains volatile oil, starch, mucilage 35 p.c., albumen, sugar, etc. The oil contains alkyl, propyl disulphide, diallyl disulphide and other sulphur components. It is of dark brown or yellow colour, with repulsive order, repugnant taste, the medical sues are due to this property. The oil is rich in sulphur and contains no oxygen. Garlic, should not be taken in excessive amounts.

Garlic is used in salads, meat, fish and poultry. Combined with parsley, it is much used in Italian and French cooking.

It is an antispasmodic, stimulant, carminative, antihelmintic, and diuretic, cholagogue, expectorant and febrifuge. It stimulates the digestive organs, and given in gas & flatulence, and as an expectorant it is useful for intestinal catarrh and chronic bronchitis and pulmonary secretions, it promotes the flood of menses. It regularizes actions of the gallbladder and liver. A garlic tincture lowers blood pressure and helps counteract arteriosclerosis. Garlic is also beneficial for blood circulation and heart action. It is a tonic, and stimulants the skin and kidneys, and stops gangrene. It is applied to nose of hysterical girls when in state of swooning. When taken with salt helps in colic and nervous headache. It is also used in dropsy, or anasarca, and in poultice or liniment used with onions. It is applied to the bites of poisonous reptiles and rubbed over ring worm. For yogis, garlic is not considered good.
