Dr. Shanker Adawal (Jyotishaacharya, PHD, MBA)
1. Indian culture is admired and respected all over the world for its beauty and depth.
2. Almost every Indian Custom has either a scientific, logical, historical or spiritual significance.
3. In almost every Indian home a lamp is lit daily before the lord we worship. In some houses it is lit at dawn, in some twice a day – at dawn and at dusk.
4. Inaugurations and auspicious occasions commence with the lighting of the lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion.
5. Light symbolize knowledge and removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Knowledge support all our actions – whether good or bad.
6. The traditional oil lamps has a spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes vaasanas and negativity and the wick – the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the Vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamop always burns upwards. We should acquire knowledge which take us towards higher altitude. A single lamp can light hundreds more amps, similarly a man with good knowledge can guide many more. Knowledge does not lessen when shared with others. On the contrary it increases on giving or sharing with others. It benefits both the receiver and the giver.
7. While lighting the lamp recite this mantra just loud enough to be heard by your own ears.
Deep Jyothi Parbrahm – Deepa Sarv Tamo Apha
Dee Pain Saadhyate Sarv Sandhya Deepo namostute
8. I pray to the dawn/dusk lamp light is the knowledge which removes the darkness of ignorance.
9. Thus lighting the oil lamp contains a wealth of intellectual and spiritual meaning.
