Durga in Sanskrit means "that which is beyond understanding or difficult to reach." Goddess Durga is a form of Shakti who is worshiped for her merciful and fearsome nature. Mother of the Universe, she represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of female dynamism. It is said that the manifestation of Goddess Durga emerges from her formless essence and the two are inseparable.
She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika and Kali. As Parvati, she is known as the divine wife of Lord Shiva and the mother of his two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, and daughter Jyoti. The destroyer of demons, she is worshiped during the annual festival called Durga Puja.
