4. The Harsha Bala:

Harsha literally means happiness. The planets are happy or comfortable in certain locations/ situations, which provides them strength or Bala. In determination of such strength, following four factors are considered:

a) Position of a planet in a specific house.

b) Position in own/ exaltation sign.

c) Position in house of own sex.

d) Depending on whether Varsh Pravesh is during day or night.

These factors are individually considered below;

1. Sthan Bala (Positional Strength): The planets get strength when posited in certain specific houses in annual chart (Varshaphal). This is also called Prathama Bala (the first strength or the first state of being happy). According to this, The Sun in 9th house, Moon in 3rd house, Mars in 6th, Mercury in lagna, Jupiter in 11th, Venus in 5th and Saturn in 12th house, are said to acquire Harsha Bala of 5 units due to their position.

In the example chart, only Saturn, posited in 12th house, gets this strength.

2. Uchcha-Swachetri Bala: 5 units of Harsha Bala are granted to a planet, If it is posited in his/ her own or exaltation sign as second strength.

In the example chart, the Sun, Mars & Jupiter in their own houses, and the Moon & Saturn in their exaltation signs, get this strength.

3. Gender (Male-Female) Bala: In the Annual chart, the houses number 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 & 9 are feminine houses. The remaining six houses are male houses. The Female planets- Moon, Mercury, Venus & Saturn when posited in feminine houses and Male planets- Sun, Mars & Jupiter in male houses get 5 units of Harsha Bala as third strength.

In the example chart, The Sun being in an odd sign and the Moon being in an even sign gets this strength.

4. Din-Ratri Bala: The male planets acquire the fourth strength of 5 units when the year commences during day time. The female planets get this strength when Varsh-pravesh occurs during night time.

In the example chart, Varsh-pravesh being in day time, male planets- Sun, Mars & Jupiter get this strength.

Tabulating the Harsha Bala

Each of the aboveo mentioned Balas yield a strength of five units each to a planet based on its position in an annual chart. In the example chart, the Harsha Bala of each individual planet will be as under:

Interpretign the Harsha Bala: All the four types of Bala are added up for each planet in a Varshphal. A planet can have a possible maximum of 20 units. Such a position is possible only if Varsh-pravesh is at night and an exalted Moon is in 3rd house. Generally the maximum unit acquired by a planet is 15 units only. Depending on the units of Harsha Bala acquired by a planet, it is categorized as follows:

a) Nirbala (No strength)- When the unit acquired is zero.

b) Alpa Bali (weak)- When unit acquired are five.

c) Madhya Bali (moderate strength)- When unit acquired are 10.

d) Poorna Bali (fully strong)- When unit acquired are 15.
