When something is not working, the natural temptation is to make a major change. We imagine that a new system, a completely different routine or a bold decision will finally solve the problem. Sometimes that is necessary. But many improvements happen through much smaller adjustments.
Human behaviour is strongly connected with habit. Familiar routines reduce the amount of mental effort required for everyday life. This is useful, but it also means that large changes can create resistance. When too many things are altered simultaneously, maintaining the new behaviour becomes difficult.
Smaller experiments create less resistance. Instead of rebuilding an entire routine, we can change one part and observe the result. If the adjustment helps, it can be retained. If it does not, the cost of reversing it is small.
This approach is equally useful in professional life. A complicated process may not require a complete redesign. Removing one unnecessary approval, shortening one meeting or changing how information is shared can sometimes produce a surprisingly large improvement.
Small experiments also give us something valuable: evidence. Rather than endlessly debating whether an idea will work, we can test a manageable version of it. Reality then provides information that theory alone cannot.
There is another advantage. Gradual change allows us to preserve what is already effective. When people become frustrated, they sometimes discard an entire system because one part of it has stopped working. A more thoughtful approach separates the useful from the outdated.
Innovation therefore does not always mean abandoning the past. Often it means looking at something familiar with fresh eyes and asking a simple question: what is the smallest change that could make this noticeably better?
You do not always need a new life, a new plan or a new system. Sometimes you only need a better way of doing the next thing.
