Facts, Assumptions and the Stories Our Mind Creates

Facts, Assumptions and the Stories Our Mind CreatesA delayed reply, an unusual tone of voice, a cancelled meeting or a sudden change in someone’s behaviour can quickly make the mind uncomfortable. When information is incomplete, we naturally begin filling the gaps.

The difficulty is that the story created inside the mind can start feeling as real as the facts themselves. We may assume that someone is upset, that a decision has gone against us or that a situation is becoming worse before we have enough evidence to know any of those things.

This is one reason uncertainty can be mentally exhausting. The mind prefers a definite explanation, even when that explanation is negative, because certainty can temporarily feel safer than not knowing.

A simple way to interrupt this pattern is to separate facts from interpretation. “The person has not replied” is a fact. “The person is deliberately ignoring me” is an interpretation. The second statement may eventually prove correct, but until more information appears, it remains an assumption.

This distinction matters because our emotional response is often created less by the event itself and more by the meaning we attach to it. Once an assumption is treated as certainty, we may react defensively to something that has not actually happened.

Waiting for clarity does not mean becoming passive. It means responding to the information available rather than to every possibility the imagination can produce.

Today is useful for this kind of deeper observation. Look beneath the obvious, ask better questions and investigate where necessary. But give reality enough time to reveal itself before deciding what everything means.

Clarity begins when we stop treating every thought as evidence.
