Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

The common names for fenugreek are fenugreek seed and Greek hay.

The plant is one to two feet tall. A good tonic.

About 28 per cent of fenugreek is mucilage; the rest is 22 per cent protein, a fatty oil, two alkaloids, trigonelline and choiin. The chemical makeup resembles cod liver oil, and the herb is rich in phosphates, lecithin and nuclealbumin that have rich quantities of iron in the organic form, making it easily absorbed. Fenugreek can be substituted for cod liver oil in the treatment of scrofula, rickets, anaemia and infectious diseases. For neurasthenia, gout and diabetes fenugreek can be combined with insulin.

Fenugreek pulverized seeds may be taken as a tonic for osteomyelitis, tuberculosis and scrofula. It is mucilaginous. It is also an expectorant and restorative. Large amounts of a decoction will strengthen people suffering, from tuberculosis or recovering from other serious illnesses. It is also useful for bronchitis and fevers. And it can be gargled for sore throats.

A poultice of pulverized seeds is good for gouty pains, neuralgia, swollen, glands, and sciatica, tumours, sores, wounds and skin irritations. It is helpful for wasting diseases. One of the oldest medical herbs.

Fringe Tree (Chionanthus virginicus)

The common names for fringe tree are grey beard tree, old man’s beard, poison ash, snow flower and white fringe.

The part used are root bark and bark.

It is believed that fringe tree contains saponin and a glucoside.

Fringe tree stimulates bile secretion and is used to treat hepatitis, jaundice and gallstones. It is a diuretic, aperients, febrifuge and tonic. The herb also has a beneficial effect on the kidneys. It is good against dyspepsia and cirrhosis of the liver. And it has a beneficial effect on the gallbladder.

The bark poultice is used for external use on wounds and skin irritations.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis)

Goldenseal has been used since ancient times in Germany, France, Great Britain and all through Europe. It is a superior herb and greatly respected.

Its common names are eye balm, eye root, ground raspberry, Indian plant, jaundice root, orange root, turmeric root, yellow puccoon and yellowroot.

The plant is six to twelve inches tall. The parts used are roots. A good tonic and great healer.
Goldenseal contains three alkaloids-berberine, hydrastine and canadine-as well as resin, albumin, starch, fatty matter, sugar, lignin and a small amount of volatile oil.

Goldenseal is an antiperiodic, astringent, antiseptic, laxative, tonic, diuretic and alterative. It has both internal and external uses. It particularly acts on mucous membranes and can be used for catarrhal conditions.

It dries and cleanses the mucous membranes, inhibiting excessive flow, counteracts inflammation, regulates menses, aids digestion, treats liver diseases, cleanses the blood and counters infection. An infusion can be a vaginal douche or an antiseptic mouthwash. Tea can be applied with a tooth brush for sore gums.

An external wash can be used for skin diseases, sores, erysipelas or ringworm. (After washing with tea sprinkle on powdered rootstock). Powder can be snuffed up nostrils for nasal congestion and catarrh. Small doses of goldenseal taken frequently will help allay nausea during pregnancy. Goldenseal mixed with boric acid makes soothing eyewash. And powder may be sprinkled over wounds for quick healing.

Note: Eating the fresh plant will produce ulcerations and inflammation of mucous tissue. Large amounts of goldenseal are poisonous. It is part of the ragweed family; therefore, people with allergies to ragweed should not take it. People with hypoglycemia may also react negatively to the herb.
