Encyclopedia of Vedic Astrology: Tajik Shastra and Annual Horoscopy: The Planetary Strengths/ Balas, Chapter III, Part - 4

Continuation…

5. Pancha- Vargiya Bala:

This the most important strength to be determined in Tajika system. This yields numerical values of strength for different palnets. Whenever the relative strength of planets is referred to, it is the Panch-Vargiya Bala that is generally meant. In Varshphal, it helps in determining Varshesh or the ruler of the year. It must, however, be born in mind that while considering planetary friendship or otherwise, Guidelines specified in `Tajika aspects’ are only applicable. The Panch-Vargiya Bala refers to five sources of energy/ strength applicable to any planet. The five sources are as under:

1. Griha/ Kshetra Bala: This Bala is determined by its location in its own house or the house of another planet depending on the Tajika relationship i.e. house 3,5,9 & 11 are friendly, houses 1, 4, 7 & 10 are inimical and houses 2, 6, 8 & 12 are neutral. A planet gets 30 units of Bala in own sign, 22.5 units in friendly sign, 15 units in neutral sign and 7.5 units in an inimical sign.

In the example chart, Sun, Mars & Jupiter being in their own houses 30 units each; Saturn being in a friendly sign gets 22.5 units; and Moon, Mercury & Venus being in an enemy sign gets 7.30 units each.

2. Uchcha Bala: First find out points of deep exaltation & debilitation for each planet, which is as under:
Planet

Mar

Sat

A planet in its deep exaltation gets 20 units and in deep debilitation gets zero units of Uchcha Bala. In between these two points, a span of 180 degrees, strength of the planet gets correspondingly changed or each arc of nine degrees (180/ 20 = 9) accounts for one unit of Uchcha Bala. The method of calculating Uchcha Bala is deduct the deep point of debilitation of a point from its longitude (starting from Aries) in the Varshaphal. Divide this difference by nine. It will give the Uchcha Bala of the planet. If the longitude of the planet is less than its point of deep debilitation, add 12 sign to the longitude and then deduct. If the difference between the two  is more than six signs, we should deduct it from 12 signs to get the Uchcha Bala.

In the example chart, the Sun’s longitude is 4-3-50’. If we deduct the deep debilitation point of Sun (6-10-0’0 from it, we get 9-23-50’. Since this indicates more than six signs, subtract it from 12 signs. This will give us 2-6-10’ or 66-10’. Now divide it by nine, we get a quotient of seven with remainder being three degrees. So multiply three by 60 and add 10’ to it giving us 190’. Now again divide it by nine, we get a quotient of 21. So the Uchha Bala of Sun will be 7.21 units. Similarly the Uchcha Bala of Moon to Saturn will be 19.15. 11.04, 17.02, 2.49, 3.55, and 19.41 respectively.

3. Hudda Bala: The Hudda is a special feature of Varshphal and does not find any use elsewhere in astrology. It is a sort of energy for a planet. Each sign of 30 degrees is divided  into five parts with a specified/ random number of degrees (Hudda) along with a lord, allotted to five planets from Mars to Saturn (excluding Sun & Moon). Sun & Moon do not own any Hudda. The Table of Hudda is as under:

Depending on its longitude in the Varshphal, a planet falls in its own Hudda or that of a friend, an enemy or a neutral. The Hudda bala of the planet is accordingly worked out as 15, 11.5, 7.50, 3.45 respectively. As Sun & Moon do not own any Hudda of their own, they can never have a Bala of 15 units.

Note: It may be noted that Hudda of Tajika system as shown above does not conform to any regular pattern. Probably it is based on personal experience of old Tajika scholars and has withstood the test of time. It is somewhat akin to the Trimshamsha of Parashari system, where a sign is divided into five unequal parts and each part is allotted to planets other than the Sun & the Moon. However any regularity in pattern within the table is nowhere in evidence. Therefore it is an area of interesting future research.

The Hudda Bala of planets in the example chart will be as follows:
